Crisis in the Middle East -
The Killing and the Fighting must Stop Immediately!

For the past month the world has stood by and watched as Israel proceeds with its campaign of bloodletting in Lebanon. To date figures are sketchy but there are an estimated 1,000 Lebanese dead and about 4,000 wounded; Israeli casualties stand about 10% compared to Lebanese. For decades we have seen endless tit for tat attacks, in the Holy land, on three borders of Israel with Gaza, the Palestinian West Bank and Lebanon, and in recent years we have seen Israel build a barrier along the border with the West Bank. Even though Israel claimed more land than it had a right to we hoped that good fences would make good neighbours.

The "Chi Rho" symbol of the early church representing the first two Greek letters of "Christ" - Alpha and Omega pertain to Revelation 22:13 - "I am Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

Two wrongs do not make a right!

Had the tables been turned and it was the Lebanon that was mounting a sustained heavy attack against Israel killing and wounding thousands of innocent men, women and children the International Community would have wasted no time in responding both politically, economically and militarily. Most of the Western World is Christian and it is fundamental to Christian, Jewish and Islamic belief that violence and killing are wrong. Even Israeli sympathisers should identify with this. The United Nations response has been too little too late, even now when half hearted attempts are being made to reach a cease-fire Israel is still being given time to mount further attacks to inflict maximum damage on its enemy, the Hezbollah, in spite of the innocent civilians still being hit. This is at a time when the West needs to try to repair its relations with the Arab world, but Israel is rubbing salt into the wounds and opening up the world to further terrorism from Islamic Fundamentalist groups who believe their cause has been reinforced by Israels attacks and the Christian worlds reluctance and sloth to condemn and intervene as if Israel is divinely infallible!

An Abuse of End Times Theology (Eschatology)

I am particularly horrified at how many governments are misinterpreting holy scripture and End Times Theology to suit their own agenda. The theory is that in the End Times there will be a war involving Israel, which will be the victor and the place where Christ will return, there will then be a rebuilding of society where everyone will worship the one God; and therefore it is in the interest of a nation to be in fellowship with Israel at the End Times. The Epistle to the Romans 15:25-27 (NB There are contrasting translations between KJV, Rotherhams Emphasised Bible and NIV (each a translation of a different transcript codex) in this section of text) is being used to justify the supplying of funds, weapons, ammunition and armour etc to Israel on the basis that Gentile Nations being in spiritual fellowship with Israel have a divine duty to minister to Israel in material things...

The Epistle to the Romans 15:25-27 [NKJV]

25 But now I am going to Jerusalem to minister to the saints. 26 For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. 27 It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things.

St Paul probably wrote the Epistle to the Romans in Corinth during his third missionary journey (Acts 19:21, 22; 20:1). As he wrote, he was on his way back to Jerusalem to fulfil a vow and to deliver the money he had collected for the poor in the Jerusalem church.

This passage in the Epistle to the Romans pertains to the duty of Christian Gentiles to minister to the poor among the saints in Jerusalem (Christian Jews). It does not give sanction to financially or militarily support Israel to fuel its wars with its neighbours; also the Israeli government is predominantly Orthodox Jewish not Jewish Christian and would therefore not be eligible. This “duty” is only to give aid to the destitute among the Christians in the Jerusalem region.

Yet many countries, while claiming to be devoutly Christian, are blindly supporting Israel in its encroachment on Palestinian and Lebanese territory and are turning a blind eye to Israel’s massacre of innocent Lebanese people. The motive behind this is clear: Avarice.

Never stop trying to negotiate a solution

Surely the UN should hurry to raise a joint Arab and Israeli peace-keeping force to police the borders while at the same time enforce strict border controls, maintaining an exclusion zone on both sides of the border. Only by working together can the chance of building bridges for our future generations be realised!

Of all the places in the world it is the Holy land that SHOULD be the most peaceful! I will continue to pray for peace in the Middle East and I ask all Christians to also pray for peace and to petition their governments to intervene through the United Nations to find a way of bringing  these countries to work together to maintain the peace themselves.

A Prayer for Peace

Lord guide those who are in positions of responsibility and able to influence the efforts of the peace process to find a mutual resolution to the troubles in the Middle East and stop the fighting!

Lord guide all holy men and women, clergy, rabbis and ministers in the Middle East and those in contact with the UN and all governments on both sides of the conflict to teach and remind the people who have influence the message of peace and to persuade them to search their consciences and open their minds to You.

Lord give protection, courage and wisdom to the people caught up in the conflicts of the Middle East; let them find a way to work together and build bridges between their separate cultures.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We ask this in the name of the Father, with the Son, through the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,

24
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
25
The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
27 And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.
